Paxlovid Antiviral Treatment

Paxlovid antiviral medication is used to treat Covid-19 in adults who are more likely to be hospitalised as a result of infection. Paxlovid can be prescribed to you by your GP, or you can contact our pharmacy to arrange this medicine for you. There is no cost for Paxlovid. The medication can be picked up on your behalf by a nominated person, or delivered to you at no extra cost.

What are the symptoms of COVID-19?

The symptoms of COVID-19 are:

  • a dry cough.

  • a high temperature (at least 38°C).

  • shortness of breath.

These symptoms do not necessarily mean you have COVID-19. The symptoms are similar to other illnesses that are much more common, such as cold and flu. 

What can I do to stop COVID-19 spreading? 

  • Cough or sneeze into your elbow or by covering your mouth and nose with tissues. 

  • Put used tissues in the bin or a bag immediately. 

  • Wash your hands with soap and water often (for at least 20 seconds). 

  • Try to avoid close contact with people who are unwell. 

  • Don’t touch your eyes, nose or mouth if your hands are not clean. 

  • Avoid personal contact, such as kissing, sharing cups or food with sick people. 

  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces and objects, such as doorknobs. 

  • Stay at home. 

  • Call Healthline on 0800 358 5453 if you have any symptoms and have been recently been overseas or have been in close contact with someone confirmed with COVID-19. 

What if I think I have symptoms of COVID-19? 

If you arrived in New Zealand in the last 14 days, you should self-isolate for 14 days from the date you departed the last country you visited. 

If you have been in close contact with a confirmed case of COVID-19 you should self-isolate for 14 days from the date of close contact.  

This means: 

  • Immediately limiting your contact with others by practising self-isolation. What is self-isolation? Read more here. 

  • Call Healthline 24/7 on 0800 358 5453 and follow their advice.  

  • Refrain from visiting us in-store at the pharmacy. We will be happy to take your phone call, respond to your emails or to deliver orders placed here on our website or over the phone for your prescriptions.  

We know from other outbreaks that self-isolation is effective, and most people are good at keeping themselves – and others – safe and well. 

Will I continue to have access to the medication I need? 

There is currently no need to panic about the supply of prescription medication in New Zealand so there is no need to bulk buy. However, we do recommend that you don’t allow your regular and essential prescription medications to almost run out before you organise a new prescription.
